Albarrie’s EsterWeb is the ideal passive oil containment system for ester-based fluids like Environtemp FR3, or BIOTEMP. Derived from vegetable oil, these can be difficult to contain with polymer solification based systems. Although officially classified as being “readily biodegradable”, they still produce a sheen if released into the environment. According to the EPA secondary oil containment is still required. EsterWeb allows rain water or snow melt to pass through its smart layers without accumulating eliminating the need for pumps or oil detection systems. If an oil leak or catastrophic failure occurs, the smart oleophilic (a substance that has an affinity for oils and not for water) layer will congeal and seal trapping the oil within the oil containment.
Due to the nature of its chemistry, the solidification time of ester oil is not as quick as that of mineral oil. Because of this, the typical solidifying barrier oil containment is not as effective as their mineral oil counterparts. The polymer does not have the sufficient time required to fully congeal and thus the possibility exists that some could escape. The innovative design of EsterWeb addresses this issue by using a special proprietary blend of denser oil immobilizing polymers between two geomesh spacers.
Unlike other Albarrie oil containment products, EsterWeb™ includes a special microporous flow control layer which traps and holds a thin layer of water on its surface, rather than a continuous needle punched oilmat. This process slows down the penetration of oil through the coagulation layer allowing for adequate solidification time while maintaining the free draining ability of the system!
